EVENT INFORMATION

This seminar aims to equip educators with practical strategies and pedagogical approaches for teaching students with Down Syndrome.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

This is a comprehensive seminar which runs over two days. The second day of the seminar will take place online five to six weeks after the first day of the seminar. This will allow participants to implement the learnings from day one in their classrooms.

Participants will be notified of the second day/date and a Microsoft Teams link will be sent.

The following will be covered over the two days:
Day 1
- An overview of Down syndrome and the characteristics of children with Down syndrome
- The unique strengths and challenges of a child with Down syndrome including medical considerations.
- Regulation strategies and fostering an inclusive learning environment with an emphasis on incorporating the student voice
- This seminar would address communication challenges. Strategies and resources would be provided to support communication.
- During the seminar, participants will have a chance to engage in activities using case studies

Day 2
- Participants will have an opportunity to look at the Continuum of Support and how we can use this to support the child with Down syndrome
- Supporting Literacy - participants will explore strategies for developing literacy skills in children with Down syndrome and they will be provided with evidence- based approaches to support literacy development
- Numeracy - the seminar will identify numeracy challenges for pupils with Down syndrome and explore evidence informed approaches to develop numeracy skills
- There will be practical activities based around target setting for a child with Down syndrome.

An NCSE Certificate of Attendance is available to participants. Participants will require permission from their Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this full-day professional learning experience will only be allowed: to class and subject teachers and if it is deemed essential by the principal.
