Reflections on the European Dimension in the Junior Cycle History Specification - HTAI

The Observatory on History Teaching in Europe's General Report shows that less than half of EU member states make explicit reference to the European dimension in their history curricula. Ireland is one of these countries, with the European Dimension clearly stated in Junior Cycle learning outcomes 1.9, 2.13 & 3.12.

The HTAI is committed to working with the OHTE, reviewing and sharing the experiences and practices of our History teachers in Ireland.  As part of this work, we are running:

  • short survey to gather feedback from our members.
  • an online forum to facilitate a discussion on the place of the European Dimension in the Irish curriculum, to share feedback from the survey on how teachers address the learning outcomes, and to generate new ideas for pedagogy.
  • talk on “Cooperation - A New Way Forward: Ireland’s Links with the EU and UN” by Gráinne Henry (Chair - Kerry HTAI Branch).

The forum and talk will take place in a webinar on Thursday, 26th February 2026 at 7.30pm, online via zoom.
