Oral Language Text Types and the Primary Language Curriculum
How can we teach children to tell a story, have a conversation, engage in an argument or ask questions? In this
workshop, participants will collaboratively explore the learning outcomes for oral language and the particular
features of spoken texts. We will then examine a text type and consider how it might be taught using the
Gradual Release of Responsibility and how, through this model, we can identify and celebrate the children’s
successes as well as the next best steps for learning. The essential speaking and listening skills that we need to
develop during oral language instruction will also be discussed.
