Phonological Awareness & Phonics / Feasach Fhóineolach agus Fónaic

How can I use the Primary Language Curriculum in English and Gaeilge to support children in developing phonological awareness
and phonics for reading and writing? These twin bi-lingual workshops will explore these essential building blocks in the
development of literacy skills. Participants will be introduced to high-quality, playful instruction to enhance phonological
awareness and phonics as part of reading and writing instruction. The sounds of English as it is spoken in Ireland and their
relevance for teaching phonics will be examined. We will also explore how to use children’s writing to identify spelling errors which
arise from deficits in phonological awareness. Many elements of these workshops will be of interest to teachers of all classes as well
as support teachers.
